are all names for the same design of water treatment equipment.  AST's can remove  volatile organics from water, and are often used to treat groundwater.  Air strippers can also be used to treat drinking water, as part of a water treatment system.  Also, wastewater  from a factory can be treated with this type of equipent. The basic design is that clean air is mixed with contaminated water, and the contaminant leaves the water and goes into the air.(it is possible say that we are merely converting water pollution to air pollution).   Sometimes the contaminated air is treated with carbon filters.

Before air stippers were popular for the treatment of groundwater, the same design was used to remove gaseous contaminants from air emissions from factories.  Clean water was used to clean up dirty air. Thes kinds of AST's are called scrubbers

About 30 years ago, I was foreman on a gas station remediation job. We installed a pump to lower the groundwater, and another pump to pump out the gasoline. The manufacturer of the pumps had a "new" treatment system to remove the benzene and tolume and xylene from the groundwater that was pumped.  For this demonstration project, we installed the first air stripper on Long Island.
