Introduction
 When I was a kid, my parents took me and my sister on camping trips. On
one of these trips, we went to upstate New York- Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga.
At the southern end of Lake Champlain there was a paper mill. The wastewater discharge from the mill had turned the southern end of the lake yellow with sulphur. This was about 1967 or 1968. In 1987, I was an inspecting engineer for New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in region 5, upstate NY. I inspected the same paper mill and I visited Lake Champlain. The south end of the lake was no longer yellow. I am very glad to be part of the dedicated community of people who have done things like cleaning up this beautiful lake. |
